Ship excursion, independent operator or on your own in Rotterdam? What shore excursions cost and who waits for you

In Rotterdam the honest answer to “are shore excursions worth it?” is: for Rotterdam itself, no; for Delft, usually not; for Kinderdijk on a winter weekday, Amsterdam, or anyone who cannot do the walking, yes. The city is a 5-minute metro ride from the gangway and Delft is 15 minutes further by train, so a cruise-line coach to either is paying for a bus you do not need. Kinderdijk and Amsterdam are different: from late October to February the direct boat to the windmills sails only Friday to Sunday, and Amsterdam is 75 minutes each way with a hard deadline. Here is what each option costs and what you get for it, from an operator who runs the independent version and will tell you when not to book it.

What do cruise lines charge for Rotterdam shore excursions?

Prices vary by line and season, but the published figures for the 2026 season give the range. Princess Cruises lists The Hague, Madurodam and Mauritshuis at 6.5 hours for $249.95 per person and Best of Amsterdam with the Rijksmuseum at 8.75 hours for $299.95. Royal Caribbean sells The Hague and Mauritshuis as a 4-hour tour and Delft’s porcelain factory with a city tour. Holland America, MSC and P&O run the same destinations in the same bands. Call it $150 to $200 per person for a half day and $250 to $300 for a full day, in a coach of 40 to 50 people with a guide on a microphone.

What you are paying for is the coach, the guide, pre-booked entries, and the one thing only the ship can sell: if the ship’s own excursion is late, the ship waits.

What does the same day cost independently?

On your own. Metro and train to Delft cost a few euros per person each way with a contactless bank card. The Nieuwe Kerk and Oude Kerk are €10 on one ticket, Royal Delft €17.50, the Mauritshuis in The Hague around €20, Kinderdijk around €21 plus €19.50 for the WaterShuttle return. A couple can do Delft for under €60 all in. The cost is your own planning, the risk of a missed connection, and no guide. Our post on Rotterdam cruise port on your own gives timed plans for 6, 8 and 10 hours.

An independent small-group excursion. Our Delft and Royal Delft day is €200 per adult and €150 per child for about 6 hours, with the Nieuwe Kerk and the Royal Delft entry included; Delft and Kinderdijk is €250 per adult and €150 per child for about 8 hours, with the Kinderdijk boat, windmill and pumping station included. The group is a maximum of 16 in a minibus, the guide walks with you rather than talking at a coach, and the day starts and ends at the terminal door.

A private day. The private custom excursion is €1,950 for the day for your group alone, up to 16 people: €122 per person for a full party, €244 per person for eight, with the itinerary yours to set, including Amsterdam.

Will the ship wait for me if I am on an independent tour?

No. A ship waits for its own excursions and for nobody else; that is the rule on every line and it is the real reason cruise lines can charge what they charge. If you book independently, the responsibility for being back is yours or your operator’s.

So we took it on in writing. On every excursion we run from Rotterdam: if a delay on our side means you miss your ship, we refund the excursion in full and arrange your transport to the ship’s next port of call, contributing up to €100 per person towards the cost. Every route is planned backwards from your all-aboard time with a safety margin nothing is scheduled into, and we work from the ship’s actual times on the day, not the printed ones. And if your ship does not call at Rotterdam at all, for weather or a changed itinerary, you choose a full refund or another date. Both guarantees are article 15 of our terms. In practice, Rotterdam is a docked port in the middle of a city with a metro, so the margin we need is smaller than at a tender port.

Is it cheaper to buy shore excursions on the ship or independently?

Independently, almost always, by a wide margin, and the gap is largest on the destinations where a coach adds the least. For Rotterdam itself the saving is the whole price: walk off and take the metro. For Delft, the small-group price is below the cruise-line price and includes the entries. For a private day, four people pay more than they would on a coach and get a day that is theirs; eight people pay about the same and get the same.

The line’s advantage is convenience and the waiting ship. If you would rather not think about any of it, the ship’s excursion is a reasonable purchase, and we would rather you enjoyed your day on a coach than worried about it with us.

When to book which

Frequently asked questions

Are shore excursions in Rotterdam worth it?

For Rotterdam itself, no: the metro takes you into the city in 5 minutes. For Delft, only if the call is short or walking is a problem. For Kinderdijk on a winter weekday and for Amsterdam, yes, because the independent public routes are slow or long and the deadline is hard.

How much does a shore excursion from Rotterdam cost?

Cruise lines: roughly $150 to $200 per person for a half day and $250 to $300 for a full day. Our small-group excursions: €200 (6 hours) and €250 (8 hours) per adult with entries included. A private minibus day: €1,950 for the group.

Does Holland City Tours operate for the cruise lines?

No. We are an independent Dutch operator based in Delft; our excursions are booked directly or through GetYourGuide, Viator and Tripadvisor, and run with a guide and a minibus, not a coach.

What happens if my ship arrives late?

We track the ship’s actual arrival and shorten the day to fit if we must. If the delay is so large that the excursion cannot run, you get a full refund.

Do I need cash or euros for an independent tour?

No. Everything in the Netherlands takes contactless cards, including the metro and train gates. A few euros in coins help for public toilets. Tipping is not expected; guests who want to usually give 5 to 10 percent.

Decide with the calculator, not the brochure

Put your docking and all-aboard times into the back-to-the-ship calculator. It shows which of the three excursions fits your hours ashore once the gangway queue, the transfers and the safety margin are taken off, and if none does, it says so. The full programme is on the shore excursions page.
