Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam: is it worth it in one day?
October 15, 2026 · by Robin Lenskens
Yes, you can get from the Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam and back in one day, and on a long call it can be a good day. Count on about 1 hour 15 minutes door to door each way by metro and train, or 1 hour 30 to 2 hours by coach in traffic. On a 10-hour call that leaves 5 to 6 hours in Amsterdam; on an 8-hour call it leaves 3 to 4, which is a canal walk and one museum, not a day. Whether it is worth it depends on one question: is Amsterdam the thing you came for, or Dutch canals, old houses and Delftware? If it is the second, Delft is 40 minutes from the ship and gives you more of all three.
How far is Amsterdam from the Rotterdam cruise port?
About 75 km by road and 40 to 70 minutes by train from Rotterdam Centraal, depending on the train. The cruise terminal is at Wilhelminakade 699, and Wilhelminaplein metro station is a 3 to 4 minute walk from the terminal doors. From there:
| Leg | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Walk to Wilhelminaplein metro | 5 min | Signposted, flat |
| Metro D or E to Rotterdam Centraal | 7 min | Every few minutes |
| Intercity Direct to Amsterdam Zuid | under 40 min | Fast train via Schiphol, small supplement |
| Intercity to Amsterdam Centraal | about 65 to 70 min | No supplement, direct to the old centre |
| Walk from Centraal to the Dam | 10 min | The canal ring starts here |
Door to door, the realistic figure is 1 hour 15 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal, or just over an hour to Amsterdam Zuid if the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are your goal (Zuid is a 10-minute tram or metro ride from Museumplein). Check the live times in the NS journey planner the evening before; trains run every 10 to 15 minutes, so you never need to plan around one departure.
Payment is the same as everywhere in the Netherlands: tap in at the gate with a contactless bank card or phone, tap out at the other end, one card per person. The Intercity Direct asks for a small supplement on the Schiphol to Rotterdam stretch, paid at a yellow pillar on the platform with the same card. Our guide to Dutch trains, trams and buses explains the system in two minutes.
What does Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam cost?
- Train: roughly €20 per person each way at the time of writing, plus the Intercity Direct supplement of a few euros if you take the fast train. Children under 12 travel for €2.50 with a Railrunner ticket.
- Taxi: expect well over €100 each way, metered, more in traffic. Taxis wait outside the terminal.
- Coach excursion sold on board: typically the price of a museum ticket plus transport plus a margin, and the coach leaves when the group is complete, not when you are.
- Private minibus with a guide: our private custom shore excursion is €1,950 for the day for your group alone, up to 16 people, with Amsterdam as one of the named options. For a party of eight that is about €245 per person; for a family of four it is not the cheap option, and we say so.
What fits in a day in Amsterdam from the ship?
Subtract 2 hours 30 for travel, 30 minutes to clear the gangway and the metro, and 60 minutes of safety margin at the end. What is left is your Amsterdam. On a 10-hour call (08:00 to 18:00) that is about 6 hours, which fits this:
- 09:30 arrive Amsterdam Centraal, walk down the Damrak to the Dam and the Royal Palace
- 10:00 the canal ring on foot: Herengracht, Keizersgracht, the Jordaan, the Westerkerk
- 11:30 a one-hour canal cruise from the Prinsengracht or Centraal (boats leave every 15 to 30 minutes, no booking needed)
- 13:00 lunch in the Jordaan or the Nine Streets
- 14:00 one museum with a pre-booked time slot: the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum on Museumplein
- 15:45 tram or metro back to Centraal, train at 16:15, on board by 17:30
Two museums in one port day is not realistic unless you skip the canals, which rather misses the point of Amsterdam.

Can I see the Anne Frank House from the Rotterdam cruise port?
Only with a ticket bought weeks ahead. The Anne Frank House sells tickets online only, released every Tuesday at 10:00 for dates six weeks ahead, and they sell out within hours in high season. There is no queue, no on-the-day sale and no way round it. If your cruise date is already inside that six-week window, check the Anne Frank House ticket page today. Without a ticket, the Jewish Cultural Quarter and the Portuguese Synagogue are the alternatives, and both sell tickets on the day. Do not build your port day around the museum without a ticket in hand.
The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum also sell timed tickets online, and the Van Gogh Museum regularly sells out on summer weekends. Book both before you sail.
Is Amsterdam worth it, or is Delft the better day?
Here is the honest comparison from people who guide both cities.
Go to Amsterdam if the call is 10 hours or longer, you have a museum ticket booked, your party can handle a brisk day, and Amsterdam itself is on your list of places you have always wanted to see. It is one of the great cities of Europe and the canal ring is UNESCO World Heritage for a reason.
Go to Delft instead if the call is 8 hours or shorter, you want canals and 17th-century streets without the crowds and the bicycles, you want Delftware, or you are travelling with anyone who tires easily. Delft is 15 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal by train, about 40 minutes door to door from the ship. It has canals the Amsterdam ones were modelled on, the tomb of William of Orange in the Nieuwe Kerk, Vermeer’s city, and the Royal Delft factory where Delft Blue has been painted since 1653. You will have 6 hours there on a day that gives you 3 in Amsterdam. Our post on Rotterdam cruise port on your own has timed plans for Delft in 6, 8 and 10 hours.
Stay in Rotterdam if the call is 6 hours or less. Rotterdam from a cruise ship in half a day is the walk we recommend.
Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam by private minibus
If Amsterdam is the day you want and you would rather not watch the clock, our private custom shore excursion does it with a guide and a minibus for your group only. The guide meets you at the terminal exit, the drive is about 1 hour 15 minutes each way outside rush hour, and the day in Amsterdam is built around what you want: a canal cruise and the Jordaan, a timed museum entry, or the Zaanse Schans windmills instead of a second museum. You stop where you like and nobody waits for a coach to fill.
Two things are in writing on every excursion we run from Rotterdam: if a delay on our side makes you miss the ship, we refund the excursion in full and contribute up to €100 per person towards your transport to the next port, and if your ship does not dock at all, you get your money back. Both are in article 15 of our terms. The back-to-the-ship calculator shows whether an Amsterdam day fits your ship’s actual times before you book.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the train from Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam?
Under 40 minutes to Amsterdam Zuid on the Intercity Direct, about 65 to 70 minutes to Amsterdam Centraal on a regular Intercity. Add the 7-minute metro from Wilhelminaplein to Rotterdam Centraal and the walks at each end, and plan on 1 hour 15 minutes door to door.
Do I need to book train tickets in advance?
No. Tap in with a contactless bank card or phone at the gate, tap out at the other end. There are no reservations on Dutch domestic trains and no cheaper advance fares, so there is nothing to gain by booking ahead.
Is there a shuttle from Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam?
Not a public one. Cruise lines sometimes sell a coach transfer to Amsterdam as an excursion, and on turnaround days they run transfers to Schiphol. For everyone else it is the train, a taxi or a private minibus.
Can I do Amsterdam and Delft in one port day?
Not well. The two are 50 minutes apart by train and each deserves half a day on its own. Pick one. If you want canals and old streets, pick Delft; if you want the Rijksmuseum, pick Amsterdam.
What time must I leave Amsterdam to make an 18:00 departure?
Be on a train out of Amsterdam Centraal no later than 16:15, which puts you on the ship around 17:30 with a margin for a delayed train. Ships sail two hours down the river to the sea and do not wait for independent passengers. If you are running late, a taxi from Amsterdam to the terminal is about an hour outside rush hour and considerably more inside it.
Decide with your ship’s times, not ours
Put your docking and all-aboard times into the back-to-the-ship calculator and it shows which days fit. If Amsterdam fits and you want it done properly, the private custom shore excursion is the way to do it; if it does not, Delft and Kinderdijk is the day most of our cruise guests end up loving.
