Why visit Middelburg
Most visitors to Zeeland come for the coast. Middelburg is the reason to come inland.
This private walking tour starts in the courtyard of the Abdij, the abbey complex founded by Norbertine monks in the twelfth century and grown into a walled world of three churches, five towers and gates. Your guide covers what it was, how the two-year siege of 1572 to 1574 ended monastic life here by force, and how the province ended up governing from a monastery.
From there the walk moves out into the city the abbey paid for. Middelburg held its own chamber of the Dutch East India Company and grew rich on it, and the streets, warehouses and the Gothic town hall on the Markt are what that money built. Your guide is straight about where the wealth came from, including the city's part in the slave trade, which Zeeland's chambers ran on a scale out of proportion to their size.
The last part of the walk is about a single day. In May 1940 shelling and fire destroyed much of the historic core, and hundreds of monuments were damaged or lost. What followed was an unusually careful reconstruction in the old forms, which is why the centre reads as ancient while a great deal of it is under a century old. Once your guide shows you the seams, you cannot stop seeing them.

Where exactly does the tour start?
In the abbey courtyard, in front of the Zeeuws Museum at Abdij 4. It is a ten-minute walk from Middelburg station. If you would rather meet at the station or your hotel, add it as a booking comment.
How do we get to Middelburg?
By train, Middelburg is on the intercity line to Vlissingen: around two and a half hours from Amsterdam Centraal, usually with one change, and about an hour and a half from Rotterdam Centraal. By car it is roughly two hours from Amsterdam.
Is Middelburg worth the journey?
For a full day, yes. It is one of the great Dutch historic centres and one of the least visited, precisely because it is far from the Randstad. As a rushed stop between other places it is not worth it, and we would rather say so.
Does the tour go inside the Zeeuws Museum or up the Lange Jan?
Not as standard, and entry is not included. Both can be built into a longer private day on request, though the tower climb is seasonal and weather-dependent.
Can we combine Middelburg with Veere or the coast?
Yes. Veere is twenty minutes away and the Walcheren coast not much further, and for anyone who has travelled this far a combined day makes far more sense than the city alone. Ask us and we will put it together.
Is the route suitable for guests with limited mobility?
Yes. The historic centre is flat and compact, and everything on the route sits within about fifteen minutes of the abbey.
