Rotterdam is the one Dutch city that looks nothing like the postcard. Bombed flat in May 1940 and rebuilt without nostalgia, it is now the country's architecture capital: a skyline of towers, a mirrored art depot, a market hall with apartments arching over the food stalls, and Europe's largest seaport still working at its edge. It rewards a slower visit than its neighbours, and it is only about 40 minutes from Amsterdam.
