Why visit Volendam
Volendam gets written off as a tourist trap by people who spend forty minutes on the dijk and leave. This private walking tour is the version that makes sense of it.

Starting on the harbour
You meet your guide on the dijk by the ferry ticket office, which is also where the Marken crossing leaves if you have added it. A first look at the harbour, the botters moored along it, and what this waterfront was for before it was a promenade.

Where exactly does the tour start?
On the harbour front by the Marken Express ticket office at Haven 39, which is easy to find and also where the ferry to Marken leaves. If you would rather start somewhere else in the village, add it as a booking comment.
How does the Marken add-on work?
After the ninety-minute Volendam walk you cross to Marken by ferry with your guide, thirty minutes each way, and walk the old village and its wooden houses before coming back. It adds roughly an hour of guided time on Marken, so allow about half a day once the two crossings are counted. Ferry tickets are not included: they are around €16.50 return for an adult and €8.25 for a child, bought at the ticket booth on the quay or online beforehand.
Can we still visit Marken in winter?
Yes, but not by boat. The ferry sails roughly from late March to the end of October. Outside that season Marken is reached by road over the causeway, which takes about as long and can be arranged as part of a private day.
Is Volendam worth visiting, or is it just a tourist trap?
It is unapologetically a tourist village on the harbour front, and it is also a real place with a specific and fairly dramatic history. A guide is the difference between the two, which is the whole reason this tour exists.
Can this be combined with Amsterdam or Zaanse Schans?
Yes. Volendam is about half an hour from Amsterdam by bus, and Zaanse Schans sits on the other side of the same region, so a full day covering more than one is straightforward to arrange.
Is the route suitable for guests with limited mobility?
The harbour front and most of the village are flat and easy. The lanes of the Doolhof are narrow and cobbled, and can be skipped without losing the thread of the tour.
