Utrecht has the canal city Amsterdam visitors imagine, at half the scale and a fraction of the crowds. Its Oudegracht runs a full level below the street, with vaulted cellars opening straight onto the water - a split-level system found nowhere else in the world. Above it stands the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, separated from its own church by a storm in 1674. It is twenty-five minutes from Amsterdam and sits at the centre of the Dutch rail network.

Six municipal coach stops ring the centre for boarding and alighting: Abstederbrug, Bartholomeibrug, Janskerkhof, Maliebaan, Moreelsepark and Oudenoord. Longer parking is at Reactorweg 7 on Lage Weide, or the park-and-rides at Westraven and Utrecht Science Park.
