Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam airport: a tour on disembarkation day, luggage included

Schiphol, Amsterdam’s airport, is about 45 minutes from the Rotterdam cruise terminal by metro and train, and 50 to 70 minutes by road. If your flight leaves in the evening and the ship puts you ashore at 09:00, you have a day in between with your luggage. You can spend it in the Schiphol departures hall, or you can see Delft and the Kinderdijk windmills with your bags in a minibus and be dropped at the terminal door in time for check-in. This post covers both the plain transfer and the last-day tour.

How do I get from the Rotterdam cruise port to Schiphol airport?

Three ways, from cheapest to easiest.

By train. Walk 3 to 4 minutes to Wilhelminaplein metro station, take metro D or E to Rotterdam Centraal (7 minutes), then the Intercity Direct to Schiphol Airport, which runs several times an hour and takes about 25 minutes. The station is directly under the airport terminal. Door to door, allow 45 to 60 minutes with luggage, and note that the metro stations have lifts but the walk from the cruise terminal to Wilhelminaplein is with your own bags. Tap in and out with a contactless bank card; the Intercity Direct supplement is paid at the yellow pillar on the platform. Train fare at the time of writing is roughly €15 per person plus the supplement.

By taxi. Taxis wait outside the terminal. Count on 50 minutes outside rush hour and €100 to €130 on the meter for the car, which for three or four people with bags is close to the train price and a great deal easier. Avoid any driver offering a fixed price without the meter.

By cruise line transfer. On turnaround days most lines sell a coach transfer to Schiphol. It is the simplest option if your flight is in the early afternoon and you have nothing else planned; it is also the one that gets you to the airport five hours early when your flight is at 20:00.

What if my flight is not until the evening?

This is the day most disembarking passengers waste. Ships ask you to leave the cabin by about 08:00 and to be off the ship by 09:00 or 10:00; a flight at 18:00 or later means check-in opens around 15:30. That is six hours, and Delft is 20 minutes away by minibus.

Our private custom shore excursion can be booked for disembarkation day. The guide meets you at the terminal exit, your luggage goes in the back of the minibus and stays there, and the day is yours: Delft’s old town and the Royal Delft factory, the Kinderdijk windmills, Gouda, or a mix. At the end we drop you at Schiphol departures, or at your hotel if you are staying on, for a supplement on the excursion price that we quote when you book. The excursion itself is €1,950 for the day for your group only, up to 16 people, which makes it a group day rather than a couple’s day: for two families or a party of friends sharing a flight it works very well.

The minivan at the Oostpoort in Delft, 20 minutes from the cruise terminal

A typical disembarkation day for a 19:00 flight:

  • 09:30 meet at the terminal exit, luggage into the minibus
  • 10:00 Delft: walk through the old town with the guide, the Markt, the Nieuwe Kerk with the tomb of William of Orange, the canals Vermeer painted
  • 12:00 lunch in Delft
  • 13:15 Royal Delft, the Delftware factory and museum, with the painters at work
  • 14:45 drive to Schiphol, about 45 minutes
  • 15:30 at departures, three and a half hours before the flight

Swap Royal Delft for Kinderdijk if you would rather see the windmills; it is 30 minutes further from Schiphol, so it suits a flight after 20:00.

What about the morning of embarkation?

The same idea works in reverse for passengers flying into Schiphol on the morning the cruise starts. Boarding in Rotterdam usually opens early afternoon and the ship sails in the evening. We can collect you at Schiphol arrivals, take you to Delft or Kinderdijk with your luggage on board, and deliver you to the cruise terminal in the afternoon. Tell us your flight number and the ship’s boarding window when you ask, and we will say honestly whether it fits.

Hotels near the Rotterdam cruise port

If you are staying a night before or after the cruise, the obvious choices are on or near the Wilhelmina Pier itself: Hotel New York in the old Holland America Line head office at the tip of the pier, and the nhow in the De Rotterdam building the terminal sits beneath. Both are a few minutes’ walk from the gangway with a suitcase. Across the Erasmus Bridge the city centre has every chain hotel; from Rotterdam Centraal the terminal is a 7-minute metro ride plus a short walk. For a night in Amsterdam before the cruise, the train to Rotterdam takes 40 to 70 minutes and runs all morning.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Schiphol from the Rotterdam cruise terminal?

About 60 km by road. Train: 25 minutes from Rotterdam Centraal on the Intercity Direct, 45 to 60 minutes door to door from the terminal. Road: 50 minutes outside rush hour, up to 70 inside it.

Is there luggage storage at the Rotterdam cruise terminal?

Not for passengers after disembarkation. Rotterdam Centraal has lockers (€9 and €14 for 24 hours), which is one way to do a day in Rotterdam itself with an evening flight: lockers at Centraal, the city on foot, train to Schiphol from the same station. For Delft or Kinderdijk the minibus with the bags in the back is the simpler plan.

Can we do a tour on disembarkation day with our luggage?

Yes, on the private custom excursion. The luggage travels in the vehicle for the whole day and we drop you at Schiphol or your hotel afterwards for a supplement. The small-group excursions do not take luggage. Choose a flight that leaves well after the tour ends, and tell us your flight time when you book.

How early should I be at Schiphol?

Schiphol recommends two hours before a European flight and three before an intercontinental one; at busy periods security queues can be long, so we plan the drop-off for three hours before an intercontinental departure and treat anything tighter as your decision.

What is the cheapest way from the Rotterdam cruise port to Amsterdam airport?

The train: roughly €15 per person plus the Intercity Direct supplement, paid with a contactless bank card at the gates. Our guide to Dutch trains, trams and buses explains the tap-in, tap-out system.

Make the last day count

Send us your flight time and the ship’s disembarkation time and we will tell you what fits: private custom shore excursion with airport drop-off. If the timings are tight we will say so and point you to the train instead.
